WHAT:
The 5 th
annual Wellness Within REACH walk in North Portland's Dawson Park
. Hundreds of Portlanders, including the President and CEO of the
African Chamber of Commerce, Roy Jay, are expected to walk in celebration
of our community's commitment to health through the AAHC's free
physical activity class program. The AAHC's activity classes are
a product of the agency's Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community
Health program (REACH 2010), which is funded by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
WHY:
To support
the AAHC's free physical activity class program in which more than
4,000 Portland-area African Americans participate annually, and
to encourage community awareness of African American health issues.
WHO:
Everyone
who wants to celebrate and encourage health and wellness is welcome
to participate, including children.
WHEN:

8:00
a.m. – Event activities begin with music, refreshments, and children's
activities—including face painting, giant bubbles and a bounce house!
9:00
a.m. – Walk begins along a 1.5-mile or 4-mile route through the
neighborhoods of North and Northeast Portland

$20 for
individual walk registration,
$150 for a team of 10, and
free for children under 6 (must be accompanied by an adult).

INFORMATION:
The Wellness
Within REACH Walk is an annual event that supports the AAHC's free
physical activity classes. The AAHC's REACH program seeks to reduce
the risk factors associated with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) among
African Americans in the Portland area through health education
and increased physical activity. REACH is part of the federal Healthy
People 2010 objective to eliminate ethnic and racial health disparities
by the year 2010.
